All female dance groups in Lebanon win America’s Got Talent

Lebanese dance troupe The Mayyas were crowned the newest winner of the America’s Got Talent finale on Wednesday evening, September 14, 2022, taking home the million dollar prize and a headlining show in Las Vegas.

The all-female dance act from Lebanon became the first Arab contestant to win the popular TV show after receiving the most votes from the public.

Comprised of 36 women, The Mayyas, meaning the proud gait of a lioness, first caught the eye during their audition where they won the Golden Buzzer from judge Sofia Vergara.

Judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel all hailed their performances as “astonishing” and “mesmerizing”. The group left audiences spellbound with their fluid movements and mesmerizing choreography.

In the finale, the crew gave an Arabesque performance wearing golden masks, white feathered outfits and sparkling globes of light, winning a standing ovation from the judges and audience.

“We did it! Lebanon, this one’s for you,” the group posted on Instagram alongside a video of their winning number.

Founded by choreographer Nadim Cherfan, Mayyas also won the sixth season of Arabs Got Talent in 2019.

Congratulatory messages filled Twitter on Thursday morning as the Lebanese learned of the victory, which took place overnight as they slept.

Lebanese singer and diva Haifa Wehbe tweeted: “Hats off Mayyas!” with the hashtag #ProudlyLebanese.
