Dance group Barry Sway triumphs at British dance competition in Blackpool

A DANCE group based at the Barry Leisure Center won first prize in the UK’s biggest dance competition – beating over 500 dancers that day.

Competing band Sway Dance emerged triumphant when they took part in the Dance Challenge UK in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens on Saturday 16th November.

They performed Putting on the Ritz.

And Ben Osbourne won the award for best dancer.

The team is made up of 15 talented young boys and girls, ages 8-15, and is led by manager Nicola Hudson and instructor Amy Windle.

This year is the first year that the group has participated in external competitions and so far they have won five competitions.

Principal Nicola Hudson said: “We took part in the Dance Challenge in April and couldn’t believe it when we got first place, a choreography prize and a place in the final in Blackpool.”

The team trained hard and raised funds throughout the summer to enable them to travel to Blackpool.

They also played at GlastonBARRY in Romilly Park.

Ms Hudson said: ‘It was a dream come true when they came in first and also won Best Dancer for Ben Osborne.’

Sway Dance, founded eight years ago, has around 80 children on its books.

The group offers review classes as well as street performance/competition, ballet, tap, jazz and lyrical.

Classes take place on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
