Lebanese dance group steals the show on America’s Got Talent

Colombian actress and celebrity judge Sophia Vergara took her chance this season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ (AGT) to hit the golden buzzer for the all-female Lebanese dance crew known as ‘The Mayyas’ – which translates to “the proud march of a lioness”. This isn’t the first time the group has received accolades within the global “Got Talent” franchise. In 2019, they won the gold buzzer on “Arabs Got Talent”. Later that year, they reached the semi-finals on “Britain’s Got Talent”.

In the latest iteration of the show, the band’s choreographer, Nadim Cherfan, has taken the performance to a whole new level. The dancer was inspired by Nightbirde – 2021 AGT Gold Buzzer recipient who recently lost her battle with cancer – who said “we can’t wait for life to get harder, before we decide to be happy”.

When asked to introduce themselves by the judges, the crew talked about how beautiful their home country is, despite everyone going through a daily struggle due to the current political and economic situation. The dancers were sad, but hopeful, to admit that being Arab dancers is not fully supported…yet. They went on to say that “being on AGT is the only chance to prove to the world what Arab women can do, art [they] can create, fights [they] wrestling”. This created an even greater challenge for the Mayyas, who were aiming to knock the judges’ breath away.

The dancing was absolutely stunning; a breathtaking spectacle of highly synchronized movements and immaculate dancing. The women wore black Arab clothing with beaded burkas. They used their arms, feathers, and glittering hands to create the appearance of deities, crawling serpents, flying birds, and to create the illusion of eyes that open and close. In the end, the performers delivered on their promise to “hypnotize” the four judges – Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and most importantly Sofia Vergara – with their stellar act. Simon Cowell, the show’s toughest reviewer, was blown away and said, “It’s really, really going to make a difference. Period,” he continued, describing the performance as “arguably, the best dance number we’ve probably ever seen.” Vergara then exclaimed, “I would be so honored to give you even more power on this journey because you deserve it. And I want to be part of it! At that, she slammed the golden buzzer and the Mayyas were covered in glittering confetti.

Cherfan was choked and in tears when his dancers took the stage, and when they left they were all emotionally overjoyed. The team really showed a powerful display of creativity, poise and strength on stage. Their journey throughout the competition is not to be missed!
