A California teacher serves up Ted Lasso’s vibes with his cheerful dance moves.
In a video that has more than 30 million views on TikTok, Austin LeMay, a faculty member at Tenaya Middle School in Fresno, teaches his students how to do the shake. The 7th and 8th grade students burst into joy as soon as LeMay struts around the yard with a hand on his hip.
“Every Friday we have these gatherings and play music in the quad during lunch,” LeMay, 30, told TODAY Parents.
It’s a tradition that LeMay and the school principal started a few years ago to boost morale and get everyone together before the weekend.
“When we started doing it, the kids kind of rolled their eyes. But now it’s something everyone is looking forward to. They send me requests for songs, ”he explained.
LeMay said he didn’t hesitate to jump in the circle last week when “You’re a Jerk” started playing. He knows all the choreographies of the 2009 hit by hip-hop group New Boyz.
“This is my song,” LeMay explained. “And I have no problem going up there and making a fool of myself. I’d rather they laugh at me than make fun of each other.
LeMay added that he used to coach football in high school and was known to shake up the locker room after a win.
“I’m kind of a one-ride pony,” he joked.
LaMay is humble, noting that he is “not worthy of the teacher of the year or anything like that”. But it is clear that his students adore him.
“Mr. LeMay has brought such positive energy to our campus,” school counselor Jenny McCauley, who filmed the clip, told TODAY Parents. “It’s amazing to see the students interacting and reacting to this energy.”
Now alumni, foreigners and everyone else are responding to LeMay’s energy through the internet.
“We have to protect him !!! What a fun teacher, ”one person wrote in the comments.
Added another, “He really got the mission!”
